Teachers! Environmental Programs to teach your students about recycling
and the landfill
Midland Volunteers For Recycling and the City of Midland Landfill offer FREE environmental programs and tours. MVFR and the Landfill are located on East Ashman between Waldo and Rockwell roads.
To schedule a tour for your students:

At the landfill, students will learn:
- The history of garbage disposal in Midland County
- What happens to their garbage and yard waste
- How the landfill protects the environment from pollution
The Students will tour the landfill where they will see:
- Daily operation of an active landfill cell and what a closed landfill cell looks like
- Contractors, businesses and residents disposing of their waste
- The garbage compactor, bulldozer and other equipment used by the landfill staff
At the end of the program students will understand:
- Recycling conserves landfill space and saves money
- Which materials are reused and recycled at the landfill
- How yard waste is composted into soil
Students will receive a compost kit for continued hands-on learning.
At the recycling center, students will learn:
- The difference between the curbside recycling program and the Midland Volunteers For Recycling (MVFR) drop-off program
- That MVFR is a non-profit organization which utilizes volunteers
- How to prepare materials for recycling
- The students will tour the processing area where they will see the equipment and volunteers in action. They will learn where each type of material is sent and what products are made from these materials.
At the end of the program students will understand:
- What it means to recycle
- Why we should recycle, and
- Which items are recyclable
Students are requested to bring a bag of recyclables to sort during
the program.
Here is the list of acceptable items: Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, cereal and boxboard, corrugated cardboard, tin cans, aluminum, clear glass containers, and plastic #1 and #2.
Please Note: The items above can be recycled at curbside or at MVFR’s drop-off center.
